Payson Book Festival, Orchid Bloom, Healthy Eating: Monday Blog Post

Writing is going slowly as this is the time of year I’m accepting registrations for the Payson Book Festival. The festival is now scheduled for July 23rd, 2022 at the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino ballroom. The process for accepting the registrations is a bit time consuming. Check the registration for changes if this is a returning author, add them to the group email, add them to the spreadsheet, email them with their acceptance and ask for the bio, picture and book covers they want on the website. Assign them a table spot. Receive the files and save them to this year’s folder then email them to the website manager to put on the website and to the program manager so we can print a program. Then if there’s an issue, and that happens about 60% of the time, a sometimes long email string tracking the problem to resolution. Add to that this year’s internal problem of a glitch in the website registrations that doesn’t allow many of the authors to even get to the registration page. That’s still being worked on. So aside from this blog, not much writing going on. But mark your calendar for July 23rd. We’d love to have you come to our book festival and meet all of the authors.

An update on my orchid. The 3rd bloom has opened.

On the eating healthier front. I’ve now spent one week on my new eating plan. Saturday night was a loss as I ate a cold chicken thigh and gluten free box mac and cheese. Neither of those are on my diet unless you count chemically laden mac and cheese as vegan. Anyway, Sunday I was back on it. I have to remember to eat more. When you cut so much fat from the diet, it takes a lot of fruit and veggies to keep you full longer. It’s weird to have to eat so much after decades of training myself to eat less.

Next up is Phoenix Fan Fusion, which dropped the January proposed date and is back scheduled for its normal time, Memorial Day weekend. Even more fun, it’s the event’s 20th anniversary! On Saturday I’m at the Common Grounds coffee shop Christmas Market! I’ll be sharing a booth with outstanding author Chrisann Dawson. We’ll be there from 9am – 2pm. Details about the event are below. Hope to see you there.

Where will I Be?

The Twilight Tuesday Christmas Market this year will run from November 9th, 3 – 6pm to December 21st. I have obtained two appearance dates, when I only expected one so I’m pretty happy about that. I had a booth date of November 23rd, and one for December 14th. Come on by, check out our version of a European Style Christmas market and enjoy.

In between my two Twilight Tuesday Christmas Market events, I’ve signed up for an outdoor market event at our local coffee shop, Common Grounds. That date is December 4th and runs 9am – 2pm. Common Grounds is in Payson at the corner of Colcord and Wade Lane.

My extra Mystery at the Fair and Mystery in the Woods order arrived on July 15th. That meant I had just enough books for the Payson Book Festival. I actually sold out of Mystery in the Woods. I also sold a lot of my western, Gold Dreams. A couple of copies each of Slave Elf, First Encounter, A New Start also sold. I was pleased with the sales of course. I was also pleased to see a good turnout of attendees. Attendance was lower than normal but still seemed good and steady throughout the day. Most of the authors declared the festival a success. Good enough for me!

So last post I talked about the lack of rain. That has ended. We’ve had rain every day, just about, the last week and a half. It’s humid. So humid it reminds me of our life in upstate New York, just without the black flies. The land seems to be perking up and the bird and animal visits to my backyard bird bath have slowed down considerably. The chipmunks who cruise my backyard for food and water are very feisty and the males sit on top of our 6-foot wooden fence, calling chip, chip, chip, for a mate. Surprising to me is the lack of hummingbirds. There are a few feeding from our backyard feeder but not the swarms we have come to expect from previous years. Hoping everyone is able to access a covid shot, or two if needed. The delta variant of the virus is racing through my county. Hospitalizations have jumped three-fold and the majority of the people hitting the ERs are unvaccinated. We’ll only beat this disease if we all work together. Please schedule your vaccination as soon as you can. The shots are still free!

This is the week! Saturday the 17th is our 6th annual book festival. Over 70 authors, a Kid’s Zone, country entertainment, it’s all here. I mentioned last week that I ordered more of my Mystery at the Fair and Mystery in the Woods. Will they get here in time for Saturday’s book festival? We’ll see!

Last minute details on the book festival continue this week! We assemble our author’s packets today (the 12th), I have three other meetings and a lunch to attend. Also, I’d like to get a mani-pedi on Friday afternoon. Just to take a mental break and relax before Saturday’s event. A little “me time” I guess. What do you do before a big, nerve-wracking event for self-care? Maybe something afterward instead of beforehand? Let us know in the comments!

The weather here in central Arizona is hot and humid. It’s supposed to be monsoon season when afternoon thunderstorms water the land and relieve the heat. But it isn’t happening. Yesterday was a good example. I spent the morning at the Farmer’s Market, advertising for the book festival. Even with a canopy up and a breeze, it felt like we were standing at the open mouth of hell. Hot! And storm clouds gathered, driving up the humidity. But did we get the rain? Nope. A few random drops. So for you in the east, who are struggling with way too much rain, I wish we could take some from you. For those of us here in the heat addled west, may the rains come soon. In the meantime, the above picture is of a spring fed stream here in Rim Country.

Payson Book Festival, Radio Interview, Dried Tangerines: Monday Blog Post

I’ve been working hard along with the rest of our team, to finalize the Payson Book Festival. Finalizing table assignments, setting up author radio interviews, scheduling Facebook posts, there’s a lot to do. Finding equipment is a big one since we didn’t have the festival last year, it’s been 2 years since we’ve gotten our stuff out of storage. It’s been a scavenger hunt let me tell you! I had to run down to Phoenix last week to pick up my permanent retired military ID card. We couldn’t let a trip to the Valley go to waste. We had to make a stop at CostCo. While there I found a product new to me, Dried Tangerines. See the photo for a picture of the bag. These are a major delight. Slightly tangy, orangey, and sweet. I love these things. I only got one bag because I’d never had them before. Next trip though, buying 2 or 3 of these suckers.

Critters! CokoCon 2020, Payson Book Festival: Monday Blog Post

Critter in the engine compartment is no joke. Hubby took the Prius to the garage for an oil change. They came and got him just after they pulled the car into the bay. They pointed out a two-foot in diameter nest. Apparently when they opened the hood the rodent critter jumped out and disappeared into the recesses of the garage. I imagine it scared the tar out of the poor mechanic. Anyway, the critter has apparently given up making nests in the glove box and has moved to the car engine. Yay! Another place for us to check daily to make sure nothing has moved back in. Sorry. No pictures.

I’ve spent the last week processing Payson Book Festival registrations. Nearly all of the tables are now full. It’s only the 12th of January! They go so fast. I’m glad, of course, that the festival has become so popular. I’m just sorry I can’t get more authors in to show off their work. Healthy eating!

Just some personal stuff. We all know that January is the month for many of us to try and get healthy. I don’t know about you but the holidays really make me ready for vegetables in January. Anyway, I’ve gone back on my Paleo routine and as of the 12th, I’ve lost 10 pounds. Most of that is water weight, but still, my pants fit better, I feel better and I’m ready to get back to some sort of exercise routine. A friend of mine is opening a gym and I’ve signed up for a free, “getting to know you” class on Friday. I’m so excited to see what she has done in her new business and to wish her well as well as get in some movement in the new year. What are you doing to get or keep healthy this month? Payson Book Festival, Phoenix Fan Fusion T’s, Book Sale & Giveaway: Monday Blog Post

Here are just four of the wonderful women of Four Carat Press who attended the Payson Book Festival!

Wow! I cannot tell you how excited I am about this last weekend’s Payson Book Festival. We’re still doing the counts, but I can tell you that there were a LOT of people at the festival. With 93 authors, vendors, and publishers, this was a great event. If you were able to get to Payson and participate, thank you so much. If you didn’t get to come, I’m sorry you missed it. We had the Mogollon Monster, the Storybook monster, puppet shows, presentations, and did I mention the 93 authors? Here’s the secret. Mark your calendar for July 18, 2020. This is free to attendees and we welcome families. Money raised by the festival goes in part to two scholarships. One to a graduating high school student and one to a student at the Payson campus of the Gila Community College. Literacy is one of our missions and we put that in the forefront of our efforts. So! See you in 2020! You won’t be sorry you’ve come to the cool pines of Payson.

After the Phoenix Fan Fusion, I began showing some of the t-shirts from the show. Here is one for this week. I’ll have to admit. I really laughed out loud!

What a deal. For the month of July, I’m still offering many of my books either 50% off or free! That’s right, the entire month of July is Smashwords’ Summer/Winter Sale and I’m participating. Gardening. What’s your gardening problem this year? Mine is the chipmunks, squirrels, and the rabbit that have taken up residence in my back yard. Sigh. The beautiful stone sided bed my husband built for me is empty. I’ve planted 3 sets of beans. All eaten as soon as they poke their heads up. Also, Swiss Chard, beets, and to be honest, I’ve now forgotten what else I’ve planted in that bed and it’s all been eaten. However, two green shoots are surviving. I suspect they’re tomato seedlings. At this point, whatever. I just am sad that whole bed is just dirt. It makes me sad.

Our front yard lizard, an earless lizard, seems to have lost part of his tail. I’ve shown him before—a handsome fellow, but life out in the yard is tough. I’m happy to see he won his battle and is free to continue to sun himself on his favorite rock.

I know it’s only the 1st of July, but I won’t post again until next Monday so let me say now, Happy Independence Day. Please be careful out there as you go to the lake or the seashore, the woods or the mountains. Even if you stay home. Play with fireworks responsibly. Drive safely. Don’t drink and drive.
